In 1984 he was traded to the Hartford Whalers for Blaine Stoughton. Kleinendorst quickly became a regular with the Whalers and enjoyed three and a half excellent seasons with the NHL team. Injuries caught up to him in 1988-89 and he was traded to the Washington Capitals near the end of that season. The accumulated injuries, however, prevented him from being a full-timer and he retired in 1990. In his NHL career he scored 12 goals and 46 assists in 281 games. His brother is Kurt Kleinendorst.
