Layfield made quite an impression, starting 9th in the field of twenty-four and completing all but three laps in route to a career-best 4th place finish. Layfield's final seven races came in 1958, when he finished 50th in points. Although he failed to crack the top-ten again, Layfield still had a very respectable year. He finished worse than 19th just once, a 27th place struggle at Columbia. Otherwise, his year went well, with best finishes of 12th at Daytona Beach and 15th at Concord. His career, though, did end in a bit of controversy, as he was one of three cars DQed before the race started at Bradford.
