The following year, he played only two games with the New York Rangers while spending the majority of that season with their farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack. On July 7, 2003, he was found dead in a hotel room in Turkey where he was vacationing with his mother and sister—it was reported that he committed suicide. Lyashenko, due to his worsening emotional conditioning had on occasion tried to slit his wrists, but after the failed attempts finally hanged himself with a belt. He left a suicide note saying that he had an incurable disease, although medical examiners did not find any evidence of a disease.
