abstract
| - The land that makes up Cunenia have been inhabited for thousands of years mainly by nomadic tribes such as the Ovambo and Kavango. In the 18th century Italian explorer Sergio Di Lagovesti founded the Royal Italian Colonisation Society which took over the western coastline of southern Africa. Following the Berlin Conference the territory was officially established as the Italian Southern-Central African colony of the Italian Empire which saw a mass emigration of white people's to the colony, which was renamed as Lagovesti after Di Lagovesti's death in 1891. Following the Second World War a controversial referendum was held by the Lagovestian National Union Party which saw Lagovesti become a republic in 1946. White minority rule was implemented into Lagovesti and from 1952 to 1960 oppression was carried out by the government against the black population. After the government of Stefano Uccello was ousted after trying to pursue universal suffrage the Lagovestian Bush War broke out that saw two organisations, the People's Liberation Movement of Zamwazia and the All-African Revolutionary Union led by Oliviero Ithete wage a guerilla war against the government. The 1965 Florence Agreement saw the MLPZ agree to hold a power sharing agreement with the white government with majority rule as Lagovesti was renamed as Zamwazia. Under Ithere a socialist economic policy were enacted with the government nationalising businesses, although the economy remained largely a mix of private and public enterprises. State religion in the form of Christianity was retained with the Roman Catholic Church playing a large role in the country's politics as widespread oppression was carried out. After Ithere's death in 1976 Zamwazia started to forge closer links with both the USA as the country was facing financial troubles, causing the TURA to mount an armed struggle against the MLPZ government. In 1989 the MLPZ announced it would transition to democratic rule with elections taking place in 1991. Since the transition to democracy the MLPC has held power in all but one election, with the All-African Revolutionary Union winning the 2004 election. Zamwazia currently is a unitary parliamentary republic with Roman Catholicism being proscribed as the state religion. Zamwazia has managed to achieve relative social stability and has in recent years started to drop many of the authoritarian tendencies that was seen throughout the majority of the country's independence. Zamwazia is rich in minerals such as diamonds and uranium. However corruption, large inequalities and a developing healthcare system still remain chronic problems in Zamwazia. Zamwazia is a member of the United Nations, African Union, COMESA, SADC and the Non-Aligned Movement.
