Waterdeep is situated above several entrances to Undermountain, which led to it being the starting location of the Hordes of the Underdark campaign. In addition, it played a key, yet unvisited, role in the original campaign as it was from Waterdeep that the creatures used to cure the plague were obtained. Waterdeep, also known as the City of Splendors, is a large metropolis south of Neverwinter, and the most important and influential city in the North, and perhaps in all Faerûn. It is part of the Lords' Alliance. It was featured in the "Hordes of the Underdark" expansion of the first Neverwinter Nights. Waterdeep is a fictional city-state that forms part of a popular Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game campaign setting called the Forgotten Realms. It is a port city that is located along the western coast of the Faerûn sub-continent. Known as the City of Splendors, Waterdeep is one of the largest and busiest cities—and one of the most important political powers—on the continent. The population is primarily human, although other races dwell therein. The city government consists of a cryptocracy of (mostly) anonymous individuals known as the Masked Lords of Waterdeep.
