abstract
  • Concentrated photovoltaics is an emerging technology which promises to alter photovoltaic electricity generation. CPV systems concentrate sunlight onto a small, highly efficient solar cell, thereby reducing costs relative to standard flat plate photovoltaics. Currently, CPV systems are being implemented on the utility size scale. This presentation explores the practicality of locating Solar System's CS500 CPV dishes on site at industrial facilities rather than at utilities. Locating the dishes on site may be advantageous in several ways: offsetting of peak electricity prices, combined heat and power generation, and triple renewable credits from a renewable energy standard. The discussed system will generate up to 2 MWh of electricity and 4.5 MWh of heat energy daily. It will save up to $1.25 million over a lifespan of twenty years in reduced energy bills, savings that would more than double with pending environmental legislation, for an initial capital investment of $528,000. Environmental legislation such a carbon tax or renewable electricity standard will ultimately determine the viability of the technology.
