  • __NOINDEX__ The Foundation for Rational Economics and Education (FREE) was founded in 1976 by Congressman Ron Paul. FREE is a non-profit, non-partisan, educational foundation dedicated to public education on the principles of free-market economics, sound money and limited government. Congressman Paul founded FREE while serving on the House Banking Committee and three subcommittees as a vehicle to increase understanding of economic principles of a free society. Dr. Paul's personal contributions toward limited government earned him the title 'Taxpayer's Best Friend" from the National Taxpayers Union; the Leadership Award from the Coalition for Peace Through Strength; and the highest rating ever given by the Council for Competitive Economy, among other recognition. He is the Distinguished Counselor to the Ludwig von Mises Institute. Ron Paul is a nationally known speaker and author whose books include Gold, Peace, and Prosperity; Challenge to Liberty; Freedom Under Siege; Ten Myths About Paper Money; and The Case for Gold. FREE's monthly newsletter "The Freedom Report," along with published monographs and books, provide an opportunity for greater public awareness of the limited-government principles that have been, until recently, absent from public debate. The National Endowment for Liberty (NEFL), a separate project of FREE, was established in 1989 to develop programs that take advantage of the enormous potential of electronic media to pursue the mission of FREE. We believe that through mass communication we can attract public interest and significantly strengthen awareness of the moral, cultural and institutional foundations of the American political system. NEFL developed and produced the "At Issue" television series that was seen on the Discovery Network and CNBC national cable television networks. "At Issue" examines American public policy and how political, economic and social institutions interact with the principles of American constitutional government, and does so in an entertaining and fast-paced, commercial-television format, while remaining commercial-free and entirely educational. By framing contemporary issues and events in other than "news of the day" terms, "At Issue" extends its shelf life to permit multiple showings and classroom applications. Some of the nation's leading public policy research organizations participate in these programs.
