Fifteen years later, Daiei hired director Shusuke Kaneko to create a Gamera film for the series' 30th anniversary. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe was released in 1995, and proved a success with critics and the box office. Two sequels were released a few years later on larger budgets. In 2000, Daiei Film Co. was acquired from Tokuma Shoten by Kadokawa Pictures, which later released Gamera: The Brave to Japanese theaters. The film was a box office failure despite decent reception, and caused the series to go on another hiatus. In 2014, it was announced that a new Gamera film was set to be released for Gamera's 50th anniversary. A teaser poster and proof-of-concept trailer were released the following year, however as of 2017 the film is still in development.
