[erka:es] created the series as a tribute to Capcom's Mega Man series of games, while mixing the Mega Man mechanics with styles and themes from Castlevania and Touhou Project. [erka:es] originally consisted of the duo of programmer Isemiya and artist WOMI. During development of Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel, Isemiya repeatedly failed to meet the agreed deadlines for finishing aspects of the game before cutting contact with WOMI entirely, leaving WOMI the sole member of the group and forcing him to finish the game on his own.
