  • He was also an outstanding running back in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and won that league's Outstanding Canadian Award in 1958. He played junior hockey for the Guelph Biltmores from 1952 to 1956. During that period he also played in four games for the Rangers. Howell won the Red Tilson Trophy in 1955-56. Howell embarked on his CFL career with the Hamilton Tigercats starting in 1955 so his hockey was somewhat limited. From 1956 to 1958 he played for the senior Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen and in 1958-59 played for the Vancouver Canucks.
