They will take any children with them if their is not another adult left on the lot. Teens can runaway if their relationship with their family is very bad. They will leave the lot permanently unless the police are called and return him. If the police do not return the runaway teen he will return on his own a few days before turning into an adult.

There are other ways that Sims can leave their home for about an hour in Sim time, such as walking the dog or going jogging but all require an expansion pack.
