Michael Charles Backman (born January 2, 1955 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a former professional ice hockey right winger. After playing part of the 1974-75 season for the Montreal Bleu Blanc Rouge, Backman switched to St. Mary's University for three and a half seasons. While there, he was drafted 100th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft. Backman was not drafted by any National Hockey League team and turned pro with the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League in 1978-79. The New York Rangers signed him as a free agent the next season.
