| - Ignatian is an adjective derived from St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. It is frequently used to describe the spirituality that derives from St. Ignatius and particularly from the Spiritual Exercises. Father George Traub, S.J., in a booklet titled You Speak Ignatian? notes that 'Ignatian' is "often used now in distinction to Jesuit indicating aspects of spirituality that derive from Ignatius the lay person rather than from the later Ignatius and his religious order, the Society of Jesus, the former being more appropriate for and adaptable to lay people today." This usage of 'Ignatian' for lay-led initiatives has been incorporated in the naming of groups such as the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, Ignatian Associates, and Ignatian Solidarity. Many Jesuit colleges including Boston College, Creighton University, Marquette University, and Loyola Marymount University have Centers for Ignatian Spirituality whose mission typically includes outreach to students, faculty, and staff to develop a greater understanding of Ignatian spirituality. There are also a number of books published since the mid 1990s that have used 'Ignatian' in their titles to describe the spirituality derived from St. Ignatius. They are listed at the end of this article. This wiki was named the 'Jesuit Wiki' from its founding in January 2006 until October 2006 when the the Jesuit Conference requested that the name be changed. The reason for this request was that the wiki was not directly sponsored by the Society of Jesus and there was concern that having 'Jesuit' in the name of the wiki would imply Jesuit sponsorship. More information on the relationship between the Ignatian Wiki, the Society of Jesus, Jesuit institutions, individual Jesuits, and employees of Jesuit institutions is provided on the general disclaimer page.
