Robert Todd Lincoln (August 1, 1843 - July 26, 1926) was an American politician and soldier who served as the 19th President of the United States from October 20, 1890 until 1893, assuming the office upon the death of James G. Blaine, making Lincoln the third Vice President to assume the Presidency upon the death of his predecessor and the second Vice President to assume office in that fashion within ten years. Prior to appearing on the Democratic ticket in 1888 with Blaine, he was the Governor of Illinois (1885-1889), and had a brief career as a soldier, Washington liaison and Nationalist Illinois state senator in the late 1870's. As the son of famed military icon Abraham Lincoln, he was a member of Illinois' prominent Lincoln family, and retired to Chicago after declining to run for elec
