Rikaspolisi is a wholly publicly owned organisation and directly accountable to the government and people. The Rikaspolisi is prohibited from carrying firearms, apart from special Firearms Units. Policemen on the beat and those dispatched to general callouts are generally are equipped with a non-lethal baton and possibly a taser. In the entire history of the Rikaspolisi, there has only ever been one shooting death caused by the force, in 2006. It was used as a last resort following non-lethal methods to subdue the suspect.
