The USN Meriwether Lewis was a Florida-class frigate laid down on November 29, 2380, launched on February 3, 2381, and commissioned approximately 3 months later. On August 23, 2390, the Meriwether Lewis was ambushed by a fleet of half a dozen Rebel frigates and destroyers. After most primary systems were disabled, including primary firing control of the PT cannon and engines, the frigate was boarded by a reinforced battalion of marines. The raw recruits defending the frigate did their best but were eventually overrun. After capturing the remaining crew, the rebels scuttled the Lewis and left the area.

The raw recruits defending the frigate did their best but were eventually overrun. After capturing the remaining crew, the rebels scuttled the Lewis and left the area. Two days later, the rebel group was, in turn, ambushed by a fleet of search-and-destroy cruisers. Among the freed crewmembers was then-Petty Officer Michael Dawson. His best friend - who had also served on the frigate - was killed during boarding. For his bravery in leading the resistance against the boarding rebels, Dawson was promoted to Command Master Chief Petty Officer and was given two months' leave before being assigned to the destroyer USN Archer.
