Starting positions in the field of twenty-six are unknown, but Williams struggled mightily in the race and finished a disappointing 23rd. Things were even worse for Williams when he competed at San Mateo in 1955. Starting 27th in the field of thirty-four, Williams fell some fifty-seven laps down in the race and struggled to a 26th place finish.
