abstract
  • The Warrior-class destroyer was a class of guided missile destroyers in service with the United Nations Space Command Navy, which saw extensive combat throughout the Swarm War. The Warrior-class was developed to replace the venerable Vengeance-class destroyer, a legacy design service had begun during the final years of the Human-Covenant War . The Warrior-class was, like the smaller and cheaper Vanguard-class destroyer designed under the same program, designed to accomplish a broad range of combat and non-combat roles. The complementing classes together filled the UNSC's destroyer requirements with two versatile, multirole warships; the slightly slower Warrior-class focusing on firepower and resilience for performance against enemy vessels, with a secondary escort capability; while the more lightly armed Vanguard-class focused on endurance for escort tasks, with secondary capability as a dedicated combat warship. The Warrior-class destroyer was designed with the ability to perform anti-aircraft, anti-prowler, anti-ship and anti-surface warfare tasks. UNSC Warrior was, at the time of its launch, the largest, most sophisticated and most powerful destroyer ever commissioned by the UNSC. First introduced in 2612, the Warrior-class destroyer served through most of the 27th century. Its first use in anger came during the Galactic War, during which the vessels were utilised disproportionately due to its comparatively small number and advanced systems. During the war's scattered naval engagements, the class quickly proved its value in both attack and escort tasks. This was despite several losses, including the destruction of Warwick at the Battle of Oriana. After the sudden beginning of the Swarm War, the class saw itself quickly pushed to the fore of the full scale galactic conflict the UNSC now found itself in. The destroyer's exemplary capabilities were affirmed as it relied on firepower and agility to counter the far more numerous exotic warships the Swarm fielded. However, the Warrior-class' exemplary performance did not spare it from the unsustainable rates of attrition suffered by allied warships against an enemy that could locally outnumber UNSC and Sangheili warships by as much as twenty to one. Although notably larger, the Warrior-class destroyer's design and layout was based on that of the Remembrance-class frigate. At 614 metres long, the Warrior-class was the largest vessel ever classified a destroyer by the UNSC Navy. It was also one of the most well armoured ships in service relative to its length; a minimum of 1.5 metres of armour plating meant its mass was nearly twice that of the Remembrance-class frigate. The UNSC Navy had over 18,400 destroyers of the Warrior-class in service on the eve of the Swarm War, with an additional 45,520 ships produced during the war as the result of constant naval attrition.
