External Benchmarking is the measured performance metric or standards which are established by comparing the performance or standard of one institution with its peer group. For example, if clinical engineering department at similar-sized hospital achieves a monthly preventive maintenance (PM) completion rate of 95% for general purposes medical equipment therefore similar-sized hospitals within that peer group may use 95% as an external benchmark to measure their own performance metric or standard.
