The whirlysmurfer was an invention Handy had created in the cartoon show episode "Never Smurf Off 'Til Tomorrow". It was developed when the Smurf Village windmill Handy and five other Smurfs were trapped in was ripped from the ground and carried along the winds to a distant island, where it fell and crashed within the chasm of a volcano. As Handy realized that the volcano was going to erupt very soon, he had designed the plans for the whirlysmurfer using the remaining parts of the windmill and what tools were salvaged from the wreck. The invention was a rudimentary helicopter that required five Smurfs to power the propeller on top in order for it to lift off. It had not much in the way of steering controls, so all it basically did was help the Smurfs escape the volcano before it erupted.

When the invention was complete, Handy had himself, Brainy, Nat, Hefty, and Smurfette power the machine through pedals while Lazy was given a seat that had no pedals. The whirlysmurfer managed to escape the volcano, but before they could get any distance from it, an eruption had knocked Handy unconscious, and Lazy took over in Handy's seat to keep the whirlysmurfer from plunging toward the ground. Eventually the Smurfs tired out from all the pedaling and the whirlysmurfer landed into the sea, safely away from the volcano, but now filling with water, forcing the Smurfs to evacuate the craft before it sank into the sea.
