It's use was first recorded in 1890.

It is made by placing the tongue between the lips and blowing to produce a sound similar to flatulence. It got it's name from rhyming slang, in the phrase "raspberry tart rhymes with fart". It's use was first recorded in 1890. A police officer apprehended Marty McFly in Chicago, Illinois after Marty asked him where he could find a drink during Prohibition in 1927. After he set off Marty's sound effects key chain from 1991, and it made the sound effect of a raspberry, the officer thought that Marty was mocking him and threw him in jail.
