The Wakime is a skill developed by those of the Genji Tribe since ages past. The founder of this skill was said to exist in the time following Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki's departure, but preceded the events of the Warring States Era. He was an ascetic who, through meditation and a harmonious coexistence with nature, eventually awoke his eyes to a "the lights hidden within the shadows", according to the Genji Tribe's scriptures. He later dubbed these lights Gen, after his newfound knowledge into their origin.

He later dubbed these lights Gen, after his newfound knowledge into their origin. The Wakime's development occurred as a product of the founder's teachings of connection to the world. It would soon become apparent to these followers that, with an era of war soon to come, they would need to safeguard the knowledge of Gen lest the Shinobi use it to wreak havoc upon the world. At this point was when the Genji Tribe was formed and the Wakime was only spread among those who passed the test to enter their secret island within the depths of the Land of Water. However, the increasing detachment the Genji Tribesmen had from the natural world, their awakening of the Wakime had decreased significantly in frequency. In the current generation, only Zenmu, the follower of the original scriptures, has awoken the Wakime and has since abandoned the tribe due to their selfish ways, intent on repopulating the tribe with those who will follow the spiritual teachings of their founder and thus cause the Wakime to re-emerge across the world.
