  • Often accused of being a big practical joke disguised as a religion, proponents of Discordianism insist that it is, in fact, a religion disguised as a big practical joke. Originating with the publication of The Principia Discordia, or How I Found The Goddess and What I Did To Her When I Found Her, by Malaclypse the Younger and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst (Greg Hill and Kerry Thornley), Discordianism proceeds from the notion that “God is a crazy woman” and honors this Goddess in the form of Eris, Greek goddess of discord. Discordianism celebrates the idea that disorder is as essential to the universe as order, and that the “order” imposed on the universe by human minds is largely arbitrary. As Kerry Thorney wrote in the introduction to the Principia Discordia, "If organized religion is the opium of the masses, then disorganized religion is the marijuana of the lunatic fringe: most disorganized of all religions, Discordianism alone understands that organization is the work of the Devil." Discordians approach religion and ritual with great humor and playfulness. There is little, if any, structural organization among Discordians, as they tend to be anti-organization by nature. Prominent figures in Discordianism include Greg Hill, Kerry Thornley, and Robert Anton Wilson.

Developed in the mid-3120s (late 1950s and early 1960s CE) by Malaclypse the Younger and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst, it is designed to be a contradictory religion. Discordianism declares that chaos and disharmony are essential parts of reality like other religions declare harmony and order to be. It is a modern religion centered on the idea that chaos is as important as order. It was founded circa 3124-3125 (1958–1959 CE) by Malaclypse the Younger with the publication of its "principal" sacred text, the Principia Discordia. There is some division as to whether it should be regarded as a parody religion, and if so to what degree. It has been called "Zen for roundeyes", based on similarities with absurdist interpretations of the Rinzai school. Discordianism recognizes chaos, discord, and dissent as valid and desirable qualities, in contrast with most religions, which idealize harmony and order. Eris, the Greek mythological goddess of discord, has also become the matron deity of the religion Discordianism. It is difficult to estimate the number of followers and correctly identify Discordian groups. There is an encouragement to form schisms and cabals. Additionally, many adherents do not hold Discordianism as their only or primary faith.
