The episode would usually follow Gabrielle for the episode. An example of this is "For Him the Bell Tolls". However, this term is not used to refer to episodes where Lucy Lawless appears but plays a different character (such as Key to the Kingdom, in which Xena only appeared in two scenes but Meg was featured throughout) or where Xena appears throughout in unconventional means (such as Ten Little Warlords, when Xena was played by Hudson Leick, or Little Problems where Xena was played by Rose McIver).
