Umakilis was a red concentrated venom obtained from the umakil, a "poison arrow frog" native to tropical forests. The umakil was a small frog, rarely exceeding 1", easily recognized by its brilliant golden color with red and purple vertical stripes and purple eyes. Umakilis could be ingested or absorbed through the skin, but was far more dangerous if directly injected into the victim's bloodstream. Raw umakilis was collected from the umakil's back after irritating or frightening it. The venom could be used raw or concentrated; in any case, umakilis killed instantly by destroying the victim's brain; at minimum, it caused coma.
