Dawson was born in New York on 21 December 1956. He's the son of banker Thomas Dawson and Nurse Julia Christie Dawson. He's the youngest of 3 children. Dawson graduated Magna cum laude from Brown University and earned a MS from the Colombia Graduate School of Journalism. After his graduation he was hired by The New York Post, where he was a reporter until 1990. In 1990 he started working as a freelance reporter writing for several US newspapers.
