Dawson was born in New York on 21 December 1956. He's the son of banker Thomas Dawson and Nurse Julia Christie Dawson. He's the youngest of 3 children. Dawson graduated Magna cum laude from Brown University and earned a MS from the Colombia Graduate School of Journalism. After his graduation he was hired by The New York Post, where he was a reporter until 1990. In 1990 he started working as a freelance reporter writing for several US newspapers. In 1995 he was hired by CNN as the network's correspondant in UKEED. In Serbia he became interested in the Balkan History and learned several slavic languages from the Balkan Region. In 2001 he moved back to the US to teach at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in New York. Dawson was against the creation of the Union of Everett, and in 2004 he
