| - In Be My Valentine, Lucien LaCroix brings a flower into his broadcast booth at CERK Radio—a single white rose, the flower that he associates with his long lost love, Fleur de Brabant. Looking at it, he remembers their brief association Fleur was the younger sister of Nicolas de Brabant, the Crusader whom LaCroix brought across, who has accompanied him down the centuries to the present day. Shortly after being turned into a vampire, Nick wanted to see his family again; and LaCroix agreed, if only so that Nick could say farewell—for, of course, as a vampire, it would be very difficult for him to maintain a connection with his mortal family. Nick's younger sister, Fleur, was immediately taken with LaCroix, and he with her; so much so, indeed, that he proposed to turn her into a vampire so that they could be together forever. Nick was horrified at the thought. He persuaded LaCroix that doing so would destroy Fleur's innocence and purity, the very things that he found so attractive. The price he agreed to pay her LaCroix's giving her up was the future destruction of his own love. On Valentine's Day, Natalie Lambert is in her office at the morgue when she receives a mysterious box of white roses. The card merely says, "Dear Natalie, I would be thrilled if you would meet me for dinner at the Azure restaurant this evening. Eight o'clock. A Gentleman from the 13th Century" Schanke is impressed by the mention of Azure, which is a very expensive restaurant. However, Natalie doesn't tell him she is sure the roses are from Nick. When Natalie goes to Azure, she discovers that her host is actually LaCroix. He has invited her, he says, because he has heard so much about her. In fact, he does wish to meet her, but it is because he believes that Nick has fallen in love with her. LaCroix has been keeping tabs on Nick's relationship with Natalie. He has seen them kiss each other. This is why he sent the bouquet of white roses with the invitation to Azure: he wants to be sure that he has not mistaken the depth of their feelings for one another. When Natalie comes to Azure, her conversation makes it clear that she does, indeed, love Nick. LaCroix prepares to kill her. However, Nick arrives and persuades him that the affection is really only on her side, and that Nick is merely taking advantage of it so that she will work on a for him. When LaCroix makes his next Nightcrawler broadcast, he crumbles the petals of the fading white rose that he has kept in the studio.
