| - Livarthia is a magocracy, ruled by a council of nine mages. The nation has a long history of powerful mages, both good and evil. Livarthia was founded by human slaver wizards from the southern cities of Madimu and Mardina two thousand years ago, and many of its towns are built upon the ruins of elven, gnomish, orc and lizardfolk settlements. Being a magocracy, Livarthia has many schools teaching the arcane art, and has one of the world’s largest collection of magical items, scrolls and books. The capital city, Spire, is built on an island off the coast that was magically raised out of the sea. Spire can only be reached by the gnomish designed aerial lift from the main land or by use of magic portals, as the steep cliffs around the city are unsuitable for any docks or stairs. Teleporting in or out of the city (including summoned creatures) is said to result in a horrible death. Pirates from Khud once held the city hostage when they managed to trick the council mages off the island of Spire and then disable the aerial lift and magical portals, effectively trapping the most powerful mages outside the city by use of their own defences. Eventually, the population of Spire and some northern adventurers managed to kill most of the pirates, though some still got away with valuable magical artefacts. The heroine Lil is known to have come from Livarthia.
