Prior to the Spanish-American War, Dewey had been a life-long sailor, serving during the American Civil War. After the Spanish-American War, Dewey became a possible presidential candidate in the 1900 election on the Democratic Party. However, his campaign ground to a halt after he made certain comments that left many believing he did not understand the magnitude of the office. After that, he withdrew from the race and supported Republican incumbent William McKinley, who would go on to win re-election over Democrat William Jennings Bryan.
