As children, Cassandra Jane's father often took her and her younger brother Hamish camping, and taught them many survival skills and how to speak Mandarin. CJ's mother would give her daughter the nickname of Chipmunk. At some point, CJ worked for National Geographic under Don Grover, doing full articles on herpetology-related stories, occasionally having her brother accompany her as a photographer.
