When I adopted Greta on March 1, 2007, she was drinking and urinating 5+ cups of water a day. Her USG (urine specific gravity) was 1.001---water basically. At the shelter, she was receiving desmopressin drops (4 in each eye and nostril twice a day). I brought her home and started injecting the desmopressin subcutaneously. We started at 5u and were able to work down to 3u bid within a week (2.5U brought the heavy drinking back, so went back up to 3U). Her water consumption went down to less than 1/4 cup per 24 hours within a day of starting the injections. A week after starting this, Greta's USG had risen to 1.038---that of a normal cat!

Her water consumption went down to less than 1/4 cup per 24 hours within a day of starting the injections. A week after starting this, Greta's USG had risen to 1.038---that of a normal cat! Just over a year later, Greta's USG is 1.042, her diet is only canned and raw, her fur is soft, silky and beautiful! Luckily, there was no permanent damage to Greta's eyes from the drops--they don't even run anymore. Now Greta lives her life like the diva that she is....happy, healthy, and loved so very much.
