They are known for their brightly colored and soft fleece products, which are celebrated for their ability to provide and maintain warmth, having been tested on the ascent to Mount Everest in 1987. Turtle Fur is best known for the invention of the first fleece neck-warmer. This invention was and still is considered a useful accessory for outdoor winter activities as it eliminated the need for scarves and additional neck layers. This first neck-warmer was called The Original Turtle's Neck and was the work of of Millie Merrell. The Original Turtle's Neck was manufactured with a brushed terry backing (acrylic fleece) from Malden Mills Company. Other previous successes for Turtle Fur included the Classic Wool Ski hats (still produced today) from the acquisition of Vermont's Ladies Mountain & Ewe and subsequently, their Nordic patterns; the Peak Hat and the traditional Fleece Headband and Watchcap, Today, Turtle Fur has several lines of hats, headwear and outdoor accessories including a fashion collection called FU-R Headwear by Turtle Fur as well as Retro-Ski hand-crafted hats by Vermont Originals. Turtle Fur still produces the Original Turtle's Neck, but has since introduced multiple and lightweight versions of the neck-warmer, including the lightweight performance fabric version called the "Totally Tubular."
