George Betton (8th March, 1896 - 4th June, 1969) appeared in Coronation Street as Fred, a caretaker, in 1963 and then the more established role of Wally Tanner, father-in-law of Elsie in 1966. In between these two roles he appeared in an episode of the spin-off comedy Pardon the Expression. Born in Liverpool, he left school at 15, and saw action in World War I in the King's African Rifles in German East Africa. After he was demobbed in 1920 he became an actor. His other credits include The Villains, Dixon of Dock Green and Z Cars.
