The roots of the war can be traced back to the fall of Freedon Nadd from the Jedi way and his ascent to Dark Lord of the Sith. Eventually, centuries after his death, Nadd's dark influence was discovered on the planet Onderon, and the ensuing battle saw the Jedi temporarily break the dark lord's grip on the Inner Rim world; this fight against the resurgent power of the Sith was a warning to the Jedi that something dangerous was brewing. The influence of the Sith, however, again reappeared during the Freedon Nadd Uprising, which managed to set up the means for the Krath to grow in might and control. Using Sith knowledge that they had gained from Nadd and his followers on Onderon, the Krath instituted a military takeover of the Empress Teta system and began a series of campaigns aimed towards Reublic space. After several losses at the hands of the Krath, Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma informed the Jedi that he would infiltrate the Krath and destroy them from within. During his undercover mission, Ulic fell to the dark side and joined forces with another fallen Jedi: Exar Kun. Eventually, Kun assumed the title of Dark Lord of the Sith, with Qel-Droma his apprentice, and together they attempted to usher the galaxy into a new golden age of the Sith. With their allies, Kun and Qel-Droma launched a series of deadly offensives against the Republic, eventually forcing their way to the heart of the galaxy: Coruscant. Following the attack on the Republic's capital, Kun and Qel-Droma launched an assault on Ossus, in an attempt to raid the planet of its Jedi artifacts. Despite the battle ending in a Sith victory, it also saw the destruction of Ossus, the flight of Kun to his base on Yavin 4, and the forsaking of the dark side by Qel-Droma. Broken and humbled after killing his own brother, Qel-Droma agreed to lead the forces of the Republic Rim Fleet, and the Jedi, to Yavin 4, in an effort to defeat Kun once and for all. Under the combined efforts of the Jedi, Kun was defeated, and the Great Sith War, after four bloody years of conflict, which brought the Galatic Republic to the brink of annihilation, was brought to an end.
