The commercial version of the "J-VX" concept car presented at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show appeared as the "INSIGHT" 2 years later in November 1999. What Honda created was not just an Eco car; they aimed to create a hybrid car that was both agile and useful. It was a sporty hybrid very much in tune with the character of a Honda, but in July of 2006, its production was unfortunately ceased. However in January 2009, the INSIGHT made a comeback. The revived 2nd generation model was now made to be a 4-door sedan, but it is still not just your ordinary Eco car.

  • The commercial version of the "J-VX" concept car presented at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show appeared as the "INSIGHT" 2 years later in November 1999. At its heart is the 1.3-liter i-VTEC engine. The variable cylinder management (VCM) system stops all cylinders according to the driving conditions, and it also utilizes the Honda IMA system carried over from the first model but with further improvements. The car exhibits strong, sporty acceleration from the combination of these systems, and though the engine is only 1.3 liters, it is just as quick as a car with an engine of 1.5 liters or more. In addition, by locating the miniaturized IMA system low on the vehicle body, a large passenger space has been secured, while at the same time achieving the sporty handling performance characteristic of a Honda. The car is also full of innovations that allow you to enjoy eco-driving, such as the "Eco Artist" system which tells the driver how well they are driving in terms of fuel economy. With a fuel economy of 70.5 MPG (10/15 mode, Honda Multimatic S), it may be slightly behind the Toyota PRIUS in terms of economy, but it is a model that lets you fully enjoy both "Eco Driving" and "Sports Driving".
