The Gum Nebula is a supernova remnant in the Beta Quadrant portion of the Orion Arm, discovered by astronomer Colin Stanley Gum in 1955. A roughly spherical bubble of hydrogen gas, the Gum Nebula contains a volume of space larger than the entirety of the United Federation of Planets and its neighboring powers combined. This space was largely unexplored until 2379, when Starfleet assigned two of their new Luna class vessels, the USS Titan and the USS Ganymede, to blaze trails into the unknown space.
