Nissan, having achieved a class victory at the 1966 Safari Rally with the 410 Bluebird, raised its expectations for the following year, going for the overall title. Thus, the Bluebird underwent a thorough redesign in 1967. This proved to be enough, however, as the car was very light, about 100 kg lighter than the Cedric, allowing it to be quick off the line and extremely agile through corners. In comparison with its rivals, the Peugeot 404 and Ford Cortina GT, the Bluebird was slower in a straight line, but made up for it through the twisty stuff. The Bluebird 510 also displayed remarkable durability, rarely encountering mechanical trouble. As expected, the solid performance of the Bluebird translated to 3rd place overall and Nissan captured the team victory. The following year, Nissan won the overall title with the Bluebird 510, making its goal a reality.
