Qualf III, or simply Qualf, was the third planet in the Qualf star system in the Orion Neutrality Area in the Alpha or the Beta Quadrant. It was the only class M planet in its system, and it had four moons. It was home to an Orion colony. Qualf was formerly known as a peaceful and pleasant world, with a reputation for being happy and industrious. Its population, numbering over 3.4 billion Orions, was second only to the homeworld of Botchok. It rarely experienced war and never suffered pirate raids, and Orion refugees from the Outer Dark and Klingon and Romulan invasions were no trouble.

  • Qualf III, or simply Qualf, was the third planet in the Qualf star system in the Orion Neutrality Area in the Alpha or the Beta Quadrant. That was until after the Four Years War (ending reference stardate 1/9806, circa 2250s), when the Rigel Demilitarized Zone Commission chose peaceful Qualf as the resettlement site for all Orion refugees from Sector Two — all 1.4 billion of them. With the population rising nearly 50% overnight, a crisis was forced upon the governing coalition of four great families. In response to the situation, in reference stardate 1/9904 they appointed Vintlel Sotars to deal with it, empowered to use any means available to provide for all citizens and maintain order, acting as a dictator. Vintlel made alliances with minor families and other political elements to consolidate his position and maintain power, while neutralizing his opponents. He also earned himself a name: Vintlel the Harsh. However, he was a pro-Federation ruler, and promoted heavy trade between Qualf, Ayirn, and Starbase 12. A resistance movement rose up against Vintlel, the Oromente Qualfn, or the Qualf Liberation Force, unofficially lead by Nashi Dolun the Young. Nashi sought allies from all sides, and gained strong Klingon support, including a supply of weapons. Clashes between government forces and the insurgents grew bloodier and more frequent into the late 23rd century, and the world was considered a bomb ready to go off. The Federation grew worried, but could do nothing since Qualf was an Orion world just inside the Orion Neutrality Area. Qualf III had a warm temperate climate, a class M terrestrial atmosphere and a 24 hour day. It had a total surface area of 764,537,960 square kilometers and, with 21% land mass, a total land area of 160,552,970 square kilometers. About 38% of its makeup was normal metals, 17% was radioactive elements, 9% was gemstones, with trace amounts of special minerals and industrial crystals. It had a technological/sociopolitical index of 999974-74 and a planetary trade profile of DBCDCDE/A(A). (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)
