The cytoskeleton is the support structure of every living cell. It consists of three types of filaments: Microtubules Intermediate Filaments Actin Filaments/Microfilaments. Microtubules are the "support collumns" of the cell and a means of transport for macromolecules, and play an important role in cell division and (in plants) cell wall synthesis. Intermediate Filaments act by bearing tensions created and so support the cell. Microfilaments resist compression, again supporting the cell.
