abstract
  • Bolivian tree llamas are rarely-seen animals which are found only in parts of Bolivia and Peru. They are herbivores, feeding mainly on the fruit of the electric tree. They will also occasionally eat fruit from other trees in the Apple® family. They are prized for their long, delicious claws, which are used by Chinese men to prolong their erections, and which can fetch up to $400 per claw on the black market. Poaching of the Bolivian tree llamas for the Chinese Bolivian tree llama claw market has decimated their numbers; a recent Bolivian tree llama census has shown that fewer than 10,000 remain in the wild. Sadly, the Bolivian tree llama is also currently hunted for its penis, which may be used as a nasal flute, a neck-ornament, or as a kickstand for certain models of Japanese motorcycles. To combat the plight of the Bolivian tree llama, a conservation organization was set up by the people of Bolivia and Peru in 1972. It is now known as the Save the Bolivian Tree Llama From the Evil Poachers and Their Guns Fund (S.B.T.L.F.E.P.T.G.F).
