Theseus decided to go to Athens, either by sea, which was the safe way, or by land, following a dangerous path with thieves and bandits all the way. Young, brave and ambitious, Theseus decided to go to Athens by land. When Theseus arrived, he did not reveal his true identity. He was welcomed by Aegeas, who was suspicious about the stranger who came to Athens. Medea, Aegeus' new wife, tried to poison Theseus to ensure the rule of Athens by her kin. But when Aegeus recognized the sword Theseus carried, he knocked the poisoned wine glass out of Theseus's hand. Father and son were reunited. Soon after Theseus left to kill the Minotaur. Aegeus told Theseus to put up the white sails when he returned, if he had been successful in killing the Minotaur. Theseus forgot and Aegeus jumped into the sea when he saw the black sails coming into Athens, in the mistaken belief that his son had been slain. Henceforth, the sea was known as the Aegean Sea in his honor.

Her cryptic words were "Do not loosen the bulging mouth of the wineskin until you have reached the height of Athens, lest you die of grief." Aegeus did not understand the prophecy and was disappointed. This puzzling oracle forced Aegeus to visit Pittheus, king of Troezen, who was famous for his wisdom and skill at expounding oracles. Pittheus understood the prophecy and introduced Aegeus to his daughter, Aethra, when Aegeus was drunk. They lay with each other, and then in some versions, Aethra waded to the island of Sphairia (aka Calauria) and bedded Poseidon. When Aethra became pregnant, Aegeus decided to return to Athens. Before leaving, he buried his sandals, shield, and sword under a huge rock and told her that, when their son grew up, he should move the rock and bring the weapons to his father, who would acknowledge him. Upon his return to Athens, Aegeus married Medea, who had fled from Corinth and the wrath of Jason. Aegeus and Medea had one son named Medus.

Nikos revieved a magical bridle, the Vulcan's Six Daggers that could cut through anything and a flying stallion named Pegasus. Nikos Aegeus appeared in Washington DC. He attacked an airplane at National Airport and attempted to extort 100 million dollars from the U.S. Superman and Wonder Woman were in the vicinity to help those on the attacked plane. He destroyed a railroad partially to split the forces of the two. Superman took the oncoming train and Wonder Woman attacked Aegeus. Superman stopped the train and came to aid Wonder Woman. He was there in time to see a lassoed Aegeus get punched out.
