He worked for civil rights attorney Howard Elias in the late-1990s, and worked on the Michael Harris civil case. In that capacity he looked into the anonymous notes sent to Elias from Kate Kincaid. Pelfry followed the clues and deduced that Harris was innocent. In April 1999 Pelfry was interviewed by Harry Bosch and Jerry Edgar. Pelfry shared his information with them which assisted them in solving the case. Especially crucial was the file of subpoena receipts which indicated that John Chastain had been subpoenaed by Elias to testify for the plaintiff. The subpoena had been served on Chastain by Steve Vascik.
