  • A flag captain was a the commanding officer of a flag officer's flagship. (HH1)
  • In the Royal Navy, a flag captain was the captain of an admiral's flagship. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this ship might also have a "captain of the fleet", who would be ranked between the admiral and the "flag captain" as the ship's "First Captain", with the "flag captain" as the ship's "Second Captain". Unlike a "captain of the fleet", a flag-captain was generally a fairly junior post-captain, as he had the Admiral to keep an eye on him, but - like a "captain of the fleet" - a "flag captain" was a post rather than a rank.
  • The position was considered to have seniority over other captains assigned to the force in question. The flag captain was traditionally allowed or required to attend flag-level briefings, and had the authority to take command of the fleet in the event the admiral was killed or otherwise incapacitated or unavailable.
  • "Flag captain" was a term used to refer to the commanding officer of an admiral's flagship. The flag captain had authority to take command in the event the admiral was incapacitated. During the 2409 Klingon Defense Force raid on Utopia Planitia, Lieutenant Commander Brokosh served as flag captain to General K'Bor aboard IKS mupwI'. (Bait and Switch: Red Fire, Red Planet) Captain Bronok Zell served as flag captain to Admiral Amnell Kree aboard USS Marduk. (; Bait and Switch: Bait and Switch)
