Southern Championship Class Wrestling's creation was due largely in part to the famed East Coast Wars of the late 1990s, which featured a number of various promotions battling on the Atlantic coast for dominance. Shane Sneer had been working for a number of the companies involved in the battle during the time period, and as time wore on he began to realize that the southern US had gone largely ignored by most of the major companies. Knowing the rich wrestling history of the area and the thirst that fans down there always seemed to have for the sport, Sneer began working in 1996 on the idea that would eventually become SCCW.

  • Southern Championship Class Wrestling's creation was due largely in part to the famed East Coast Wars of the late 1990s, which featured a number of various promotions battling on the Atlantic coast for dominance. While wrestling, particularly in the northeast US, had moved in a direction more catering towards the "smart" wrestling fan and arguably more violent and controversial than it had ever been, Sneer saw a hole in the market for a promotion that played towards the old-school wrestling fans of the 1970s, when each promotion worked their own seperate territories. Based on the idea that fans in the south still had an appetite for traditional wrestling with clearly defined heels and babyfaces feuding against each other in a family-friendly environment, Sneer began scouting talent. With the help of a few unknown sponsors as well as his own personal savings, Sneer finally opened SCCW in March of 1998.
