  • Details: In 1878, a mysterious carpenter arrived at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The nuns there did not have a staircase to get to the choir area, until he built an amazing spiral one. It was able to stand without any central support. The nuns planned to thank him with a dinner, but he vanished and was never identified. The staircase stands to this day and many still wonder who the carpenter may have been. A man named Oscar Hadwiger claimed that it was his grandfather, Johann, especially after he found tolls that he believes helped built the staircase, along with several design plans that may have been for it. However, the carpenter's identity will probably remain unknown along with how he was able to build it. Extra Notes: The case first aired on the November 21, 1990 episode.
