Assist Items are special items that can aid the player in completing the level in ways that normal power-ups can't. They can only be purchased at a Shop, but you can have up to four of them at one time. You can only have one copy of each item at a time. All characters share Assist Items with no character-specific ones.

It says with the character until death.
