To get employment as an archaeologist (in the U.S., at any rate), one is usually expected to get a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology (Archaeology is usually considered a sub-field of Anthropology). This normally takes four years. One of the courses should be a Field School in Archaeology, which gives the student actual field experience under the supervision of a professional archaeologist.
