Jan van Walbeeck, sometimes written as Johan or Johannes (c. 1602 – after 1649) was a Dutch navigator and cartographer during a 1620s circumnavigation of the earth, an admiral of the Dutch West India Company, and the first governor of the Netherlands Antilles. It is known that he studied at the University of Leiden for a time; and that he had spent time in the Dutch East Indies before joining the West India Company.

abstract	Jan van Walbeeck, sometimes written as Johan or Johannes (c. 1602 – after 1649) was a Dutch navigator and cartographer during a 1620s circumnavigation of the earth, an admiral of the Dutch West India Company, and the first governor of the Netherlands Antilles. It is known that he studied at the University of Leiden for a time; and that he had spent time in the Dutch East Indies before joining the West India Company. He went to Dutch Recife in 1630 and 1633, where he rose to become the head of the Politieke Raad ("Political Council") before returning to the Netherlands in 1633. In mid-1634, he led the expedition that took Curaçao for the West India Company.
