Each city was an independent nation, which were in a state of uneasy peace with the others. The population was divided into six castes: Nobility, Priesthood, Warrior, Merchant, Worker and Slave. It was virtually impossible to escape one's caste, except by extreme amounts of bravery in battle - thus usually barring non-Warriors from doing so.
