In November of 1993, civil rights attorney Honey Chandler quoted from Hawthorne's book in the closing remarks of the wrongful death lawsuit brought by Deborah Church against LAPD detective Harry Bosch. Bosch later found a photocopy of a letter sent to Chandler by a Dollmaker copycat killer folded inside the pages of the book in her office.
